  • NMSC Board of Directors allotted $500 for a professional service to look into feasibility of an oil and gas lease with Michigan Consolidated Gas Company.
  • The property (33acres) directly West of Club grounds is put up for sale. NMSC made offer at 2,250 an acre. Members asked to pledge additional monies for purchase of this West property. Board would issue bonds to members with interest paid back at a rate of 8% for 10 years.
  • North Macomb ladies are encouraged to leave husbands at home while they attend a ladies stag trip to Toronto. Mrs. Trahan in charge.

  • A raffle was held in conjunction with Mother’s Day to sponsor North Macomb women for Aruba trip at a cost of $309. Two ladies won their prize and went to Aruba; Marge and Tracy Trahan.
  • North Macomb builds a float for the Parade at the Romeo Peach Festival.
  • Michigan Consolidated Gas Company confronts club for a possible oil mining lease on club grounds. North Macomb hires a lawyer to look over proposed oil lease contracts. Seismograph tests performed on club grounds by Bendiz Corp. The proposed oil lease would be for 3 years. Club would receive 3/16 of oil production and also control placement of oil rigs.

1974

  • That’s Right! The #1 ale elixir was prohibited to be served at NMSC. This was a joint effort of other sportsmen’s clubs and shooting groups due to a one million-dollar donation in support of gun control legislation by the Budweiser Brewing Company.
  • NMSC posted petitions to recall U.S. Senator Phil Hart due to his anti-gun political position. Recall campaign not successful….Later the city of Detroit names a Plaza in honor of Senator Hart.
  • A one year moratorium on hunting on club grounds was instituted due to a game habitat started on NE corner of club property.
  • The Fox Hunt was sponsored by NMSC to improve farmer relations.
  • The planting and harvesting of corn on club grounds was a regular activity.

  • After many deliberations about how big, and where it should go, we built a flagpole so we could do our country proud. We also put a plaque on the pole to show past presidents that have passed away.

  • Due to a pollution problem, Avon Twp. Park was closed. NMSC was worried that the same would happen to others if something wasn’t done. NMSC wrote letters, and got support from the Detroit Free Press.
  • We enclosed the back porch this year by borrowing money from Tillie Hatfield. We named it the “Hatfield Room” in loving memory of Jack Hatfield, one of the original NMSC members.

  • Forty hunters showed up and 3 foxes were taken.
  • Many discussions of the possibility of creating a duck pond.

  • State Police recovered silverware stolen from NMSC.
  • Huron-Clinton purchased the clubhouse for a total of $49,000.
  • The fox hunt was held on the existing NMSC properties and included 46 hunters.
  • Forty hunters showed up and 3 foxes were taken.
  • There are 45 acres available at Inwood and Mt. Vernon road for $8,800. Huron-Clinton wants this property in exchange for the regular club site – along with 33 acres adjacent to the existing property.

1956

  • NMSC purchased 600 copies of the by-laws for $105.00.
  • Andy Downey and J. Wells Jr. were deputized so that we could have a deputy sheriff within the club. The club paid $18 the cost of deputizing both of them.
  • The board of directors made the decision to screen all applicants to NMSC and that all new members hereafter will require board approval.
  • Stoney Creek Park could not exclude our club property from the formation of the park. We must get appraising from the park and look for another location.
  • The Board of Directors seems to be resigned to loosing our club to Huron-Clinton. Huron-Clinton agreed to let NMSC stay until December of 1958.

1954-55

  • The motion was seen to stock Stoney Creek with smallmouth bass.
  • Lost $1.00 due to intense cold conditions 2 degrees above zero. They also moved the meeting place because of the weather to the Washington Men’s Club.

  • National Bank of Utica offered to loan up to $3,500 to increase the building fund.
  • The MUCC reported about unusually high deer starvation around the Gaylord area. The size of the herd is too big for available habitat to carry.
  • The unanimous ruling of women to vote equal to men passed in May.

Highlights

  • Meetings are still being held at the American Legion “Fox Hole” in Utica. Board meetings at Ernie’s Tavern in Washington.
  • Term limitations were set this year at a maximum of 2 years, excluding the secretary.
  • Club member suspended for arrest and pleading guilty for stealing chickens.
  • October of 1950 saw the first NMSC newsletter.

Highlights

  • This year had many different events, including dog trials and organized hunts. It was also the first year for the Chicken Shoot.
  • A one hundred question test was given to select delegates to go to youth camp. The test came from the “Game & Fishing Digest”. The two boys who won were sent all expenses paid.
  • Beer started being served in April at meetings. There was no charge for beer but there was a “kitty” for donations.

Highlights

  • NMSC’s first annual picnic was held in 1948.
  • In 1948 NMSC purchased 40 acres of land from William Stefanski.
  • In 1948 a member who wished to use the rifle range could do so by picking up the keys to the range and a spotting scope at Ernie’s Tavern in Washington.
  • The dues in 1948 were $3.00 a year plus an initiation fee of $3.00.
